    Superconducting Undulators (SCUs) can produce higher photon flux and cover a wider photon energy range compared to permanent magnet undulators (PMUs) with the same vacuum gap and period length. To build the know-how to implement superconducting undulators for future upgrades of the European XFEL facility, the test stand SUNDAE1 for the characterization of SCU is being developed. The purpose of SUNDAE1 is the training, tuning and development of new SCU coils by means of precise magnetic field measurements. The experimental setup will allow the characterization of magnets up to 2m in length. These magnets will be immersed in a Helium bath at 4K or 2K temperature. In this article, we describe the experimental setup and highlight its expected performances

    Ecological Indicator Values for Europe (EIVE) 1.0

    Aims: To develop a consistent ecological indicator value system for Europe for five of the main plant niche dimensions: soil moisture (M), soil nitrogen (N), soil reaction (R), light (L) and temperature (T). Study area: Europe (and closely adjacent regions). Methods: We identified 31 indicator value systems for vascular plants in Europe that contained assessments on at least one of the five aforementioned niche dimensions. We rescaled the indicator values of each dimension to a continuous scale, in which 0 represents the minimum and 10 the maximum value present in Europe. Taxon names were harmonised to the Euro+Med Plantbase. For each of the five dimensions, we calculated European values for niche position and niche width by combining the values from the individual EIV systems. Using T values as an example, we externally validated our European indicator values against the median of bioclimatic conditions for global occurrence data of the taxa. Results: In total, we derived European indicator values of niche position and niche width for 14,835 taxa (14,714 for M, 13,748 for N, 14,254 for R, 14,054 for L, 14,496 for T). Relating the obtained values for temperature niche position to the bioclimatic data of species yielded a higher correlation than any of the original EIV systems (r = 0.859). The database: The newly developed Ecological Indicator Values for Europe (EIVE) 1.0, together with all source systems, is available in a flexible, harmonised open access database. Conclusions: EIVE is the most comprehensive ecological indicator value system for European vascular plants to date. The uniform interval scales for niche position and niche width provide new possibilities for ecological and macroecological analyses of vegetation patterns. The developed workflow and documentation will facilitate the future release of updated and expanded versions of EIVE, which may for example include the addition of further taxonomic groups, additional niche dimensions, external validation or regionalisation

    A Standardized Morpho-Functional Classification of the Planet’s Humipedons

    It was time to take stock. We modified the humipedon classification key published in 2018 to make it easier and more practical. This morpho-functional taxonomy of the topsoil (humipedon) was only available in English; we also translated it into French and Italian. A standardized morphofunctional classification of humipedons (roughly the top 30–40 cm of soil: organic and organomineral surface horizons) would allow for a better understanding of the functioning of the soil ecosystem. This paper provides the founding principles of the classification of humipedon into humus systems and forms. With the recognition of a few diagnostic horizons, all humus systems can be determined. The humus forms that make up these humus systems are revealed by measuring the thicknesses of the diagnostic horizons. In the final part of the article, several figures represent the screenshots of a mobile phone or tablet application that allows for a fast recall of the diagnostic elements of the classification in the field. The article attempts to promote a standardized classification of humipedons for a global and shared management of soil at planet level

    Learning to Think Iconically in the Human and Social Sciences: Iconic Standards of Understanding as a Pivotal Challenge for Method Development

    Theoretically as well as alongside an empirical research idea, this paper outlines conditions for the development of social scientific empirical methods able to further exploit the iconic potential of the image. Reconstructing the role of formal pictorial elements for the standards of understanding within the medium “image” is considered pivotal in this endeavor. Within the context of language, standards of communication have already been extensively researched. The linguistic format of the narrative, for instance, is well studied. Up to now, though, comparable formal vehicles of iconic semantics have only been examined in aesthetics and art history. Nevertheless, standards of iconic understanding are part of our implicit knowledge, are incessantly in use in everyday practice and, thus, the basis of everyday identity formation. With the help of empirical methods based on an iconic logos we can deepen our understanding of orientations, longings, and anxieties of our time that are often silently conveyed by images. Fashion will be outlined as a prototypical field, in which an empirically based development of such methods might start off

    Ecological Indicator Values of Europe (EIVE) 1.0: a powerful open-access tool for vegetation scientists

    Background: Ecological indicator values (EIVs) have a long tradition in vegetation ecological research in Europe. EIVs characterise the ecological optimum of species along major environmental gradients using ordinal scales. Calculating mean indicator values per plot is an effective way of bioindication. Following first systems in Russia and Central Europe, about two dozen EIV systems have been published for various parts of Europe. Aims: As there was no EIV system available at European scale that could be used for broad-scale analyses, e.g. in the context of the European Vegetation Archive (EVA), we develop such a system for the first time for the vascular plants of Europe. Location: Europe. Methods: We compiled all national and major regional EIV systems and harmonized their plant nomenclature with a newly developed contemporary European taxonomic backbone (EuroSL 1.0). Using regression, we rescaled the individual EIV systems for the main parameters to continent-wide quasi-metric scales, ranging from 1 to 99. The data from each individual system were then translated into a probability curve approximated with a normal distribution, weighed with the logarithm of the area represented and summed up across the systems. From the European density curve we extracted then a mean and a variance, which characterise the distribution of this species along this particular ecological gradient. Results and conclusions: Our consensus approach of integrating the expert knowledge of all existing EIV systems allowed deriving the first consistent description of the ecological behaviour for a significant part of the European vascular flora. The resulting Ecological Indicator Values of Europe (EIVE) 1.0 will be published open access to allow bioindication beyond country borders. Future releases of EIVE might contain more parameters, non-vascular plants and regionalisation or could be re-adjusted and extended to hitherto non-covered species through co-occurrence data from EVA

    The psoralen derivative 4,5',8-trimethylpsoralen was covalently linked to the 5'-terminus of an 18mer oligodeoxyribonucleotide in the course of solid phase synthesis using phosphoroamidite chemistry. The derivative was introduced as a phosphitylation compound in the last cycle of the oligomer synthesis. The reagent was prepared by 4'-chloromethylation of 4,5',8-trimethylpsoralen, introduction of a linker by ethanediol and phosphitylation with chloro-[(beta-cyanoethoxy)-N,N-diisopropylamino]-phosphine. After oxydation and deprotection the 5'-psoralen modified oligodeoxyribonucleotide was characterised by HPLC. Hybridisation of the psoralen-modified oligomer to a complementary single stranded 21mer followed by irradiation at 350 nm revealed a photo-cross-linked double-stranded DNA fragment analysed on denaturing polyacrylamide gels. The cross-link could be reversed upon irradiation at 254nm

    Preliminary phylogenetic analysis of selected subterranean amphipod crustaceans using small subunit rDNA gene sequences

    AbstractThe exclusively subterranean amphipod genus Bactrurus (Crangonyctidae) occurs in central and eastern parts of the United States. Bactrurus is characterized by morphologically similar species. In at least one instance, the distinction between separate species and geographic variants appears to be blurred. A sequence analysis of the small subunit (18S) rDNA gene was conducted for eight amphipod taxa. Both maximum likelihood and distance methods resulted in phylogenies for several species of Bactrurus that are in accordance with morphological data. These results could not be validated by a parsimony analysis. All three methods of phylogenetic inference, however, produced identical basal branching patterns. The molecular analyses do not support the recognition of what initially appeared to be a new species of Bactrurus from glaciated areas in Montgomery County, Illinois
